Before anything else on this page matters, one question: are you in the City of Seminole, or in unincorporated Pinellas County?
Large parts of 33772, 33776, 33777 and 33778 carry a Seminole mailing address and sit outside city limits. Two neighbors across a street can be under different rulebooks, with different thresholds, different fees and different penalties. The postal address does not tell you and neither does the fire station.
The way to know is to look the parcel up on the Pinellas County Property Appraiser’s site and read the jurisdiction field. Why the whole town is losing trees at once
Seminole is dense 1970s ranch-home development on flat ground between Boca Ciega Bay and the Pinellas Trail. The houses went up together and the trees went in with them, laurel oaks and queen palms, mostly, planted close to slabs on lots that were not designed to hold a mature canopy.
Fifty-odd years later they are reaching the end of a working life at the same time, street by street. Drive Oakhurst or the roads around Bay Pines and you can see it: same house, same tree, same stage. That clustering is the real story here, and it is why a Seminole homeowner’s neighbors all seem to be calling tree companies in the same year.
Laurel oak does not decline visibly. It rots from the middle out and holds a full green canopy while it does it, which is why a tree that looks fine in June ends up across a driveway in August.

What comes out to your house depends on the tree: a spider lift for a narrow side yard, bucket trucks and grapple trucks for the wood and the brush, and a crane on the picks that need one. Frequently asked questions
My address says Seminole. Am I in the city? Quite possibly not. Check the parcel on the Property Appraiser’s site, or ask us to. If it comes back unincorporated, the county rules apply instead, and they are genuinely different.
Do palms need a permit in the City of Seminole? The city’s code says palms are not defined as trees, so they sit outside the permit requirement, unless the palm appears on an approved landscape plan for the property. In unincorporated county, by contrast, all palms six feet and taller are protected.
My laurel oak still looks healthy. Why would I remove it? Sometimes you should not, and we will say so. But laurel oak hides decay, and the ones planted with these houses are inside the age band where hollowing typically starts well before the canopy shows it. A proper assessment tells you far more than the leaves do.
Do you need to be in my HOA’s good graces? If your property is in a homeowner, condominium or mobile home park association, the City’s application requires an approval letter from the association. We will tell you at the estimate whether that applies to you.
